In 2021 we began a deep dive on to learn more and advocate for the housing and homelessness struggle in our city.
On Sunday, August 18th at 3pm there will be an update zoom call! For any interested, sign up here for the link!
From 2021 until today – this initiative accomplished a lot!
– Interviewing 20+ local organizations to learn how churches can help not hurt
– Guided by that learning an all church (and beyond) learning experience was created we called The H&H Challenge where people were given an opportunity to learn and take action in 4 different “steps”.
– We hosted multiple training seminars on housing and homelessness
– We determined somewhat of a gap in the conversation of affordable housing regarding ADUs or accessory dwelling units which led to:
-
- Getting involved working with the City Council
- Partnering with local organizations attempting to do similar work
- Receiving a grant from AARP to develop promotional materials to get the word out about ADUs (passion for them due to intergenerational living options)
- Production of a short documentary for which we hosted a group showing and AARP has advertised: In My Back Yard
- We developed a website that explains the benefits of ADUs
- We hosted a show and tell event with a “shell” of what an ADU is like and even had our local city council member share his hopes for affordable housing with the crowd gathered.
- We raised $25,000 towards an ADU in someone’s backyard, and that project is still in planning!
- We made efforts to build an ADU “cluster” on our property the Mill City Commons (3023 Randolph Street NE) – we have an update on this.
On the call we will give an update on previous projects and share about an opportunity our church has been invited to consider to invest in a residential property!
